How To Put A Toner On Blonde Hair
I love to dye my pilus all colors of the rainbow. I love all things vintage. I also enjoy creating art, taking photos, and doing information technology myself.
What Exactly Is Hair Toner?
Toner is a sweet fiddling product that neutralizes brassy yellow and orange tones on bleached hair. Information technology is usually purple-blue tinted. When applied to bleached hair, it takes it to more of an ashy, dusty, or platinum color. That means a much more natural-looking hair tone! It can besides make your hair look shinier and healthier.
Toner is the term used for the product specifically meant to tone hair, but you can as well use other products to tone your hair, such equally hair dye or majestic shampoo.
Accept you ever seen someone walking around with xanthous hair? And I don't mean like they picked up a bottle of Manic Panic's Electric Banana hair dye. I mean, they tried to become blonde, and it just came out equally a terrible mistake. Instead of Jennifer Lawrence, information technology was Lisa Simpson. That's bad.
The problem is that they didn't employ a toner.
What Does Toner Do to Hair? Important Things to Know About Toner
- Toners alter the undertone of hair color just exercise non lift the shade. This is why they are meant to be applied to bleached or blonde hair and will not work on darker hair.
- Toner tin assistance you manipulate the shade of your blonde hair to brand it look libation, dingier, ashier, or even unlike colors like pink or purple.
- Yous can utilise it all over your pilus or just in specific parts where you lot want to alter the shade. For example, it can tone down but the part of your hair with highlights or just at the roots to make them await more natural.
- The more you wash your pilus, the more oftentimes you'll have to tone information technology. You can either tone it at dwelling or get to the salon for bear on-ups.
- You can utilize three dissimilar types of products to tone: royal shampoo, ammonia toners, or dye. I'll get into details about those beneath.
What Kind of Toner Should You Use?
Toner Blazon | When to Use | How to Use It | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Ammonia-based toner | Hair should already be blonde. Await a few days if y'all've just bleached it a agglomeration to avert over-damaging. | Follow instructions on the product. Usually yous'll demand to mix with a 20-vol developer. | This will not lift the colour of your hair. |
Purple shampoo | Afterwards bleaching hair. Gentler than ammonia-based toner. | Wash hair with information technology two–three times a week and leave in for 5–ten minutes each time. | Different brands have dissimilar strengths of toning. |
Majestic hair dye | After bleaching your hair | Mix a very small amount with white conditioner and get out in 15–30 minutes. | Brand sure to employ a modest amount! |
Wella Ammonia Toners
Wella has a great toner line called Color Charm. An ammonia-based toner is really a demi-permanent hair color that contains ammonia. It will change the pigment makeup of your hair shafts. So be careful!! If you've merely washed a bunch of bleaching, your pilus is already pretty frail. If you can stand it, wait a few days. In those few days, I'd really effort to stay away from shampooing. Shampoo will just serve to dry out your pilus even more.
Once your hair is done being mad at y'all, you'll be prepare to apply toner. Wella, a well-known brand of toner, calls for you to mix 1 part toner with 2 parts 20 volume developer. The mixture is left in the pilus for upwardly to 30 minutes before rinsing.
Don't attempt to make upwardly your own ratio or alter the instructions that you read on the canteen. Follow them! Each toner is different, and anybody's pilus reacts slightly differently to the products. Give yourself the best take chances at success and follow the directions.
Purple Shampoo
Some people skip that whole thing and tone using purple shampoo. Yes, that's actually what it'south called. I use Generic Purple Shampoo, which you can pick upwardly at a Emerge'south or online. It's got a really strong purple tone to it, so when it'south left on your hair for five–10 minutes, it will neutralize brassiness. This is great because you tin can utilise it to maintain ashy tones every time y'all launder your hair!
Y'all might need to try a couple of different brands to get the strength of toning that y'all demand.

Dye
Some other method people use to tone is to just use dye. This is technically non "toning," but it will serve the same purpose. The common theme here is using purple to neutralize xanthous . . . then the logical formula to tone using hair dye would be to take a *small* corporeality of purple hair dye and mix information technology with a much larger corporeality of white conditioner. You'd employ the mixture for at to the lowest degree 15–30 minutes and so rinse out.
When to Tone Blond Pilus
Obviously, y'all should apply it after bleaching. But when is best?
If you become to the shop and purchase yourself a toner, say, Wella's Color Amuse in Lightest Ash Blonde, you'd really have to wait until your hair is lifted to a very light tone of yellow.
Otherwise, you run the risk of wasting your production and not achieving the desired results. So, one time y'all're at a light-light yellow, you're gratuitous to tone.
In full general, yous want to make sure that your pilus is the desired level of blonde that yous want and that it's in a identify where it tin can take more than treatment (is not too damaged).
What Results Can Y'all Get?
You tin become a huge range of color tones, from warm honey to calorie-free ash, and even silver! Wella Color Charm Toners take even got some scarlet, brownish, and violet toners that can exist used on dark hair. Do your research and effigy out what sort of tints and tones yous can create on your own hair!
Sometimes, you get unintended results. If yous choose the wrong toner to residue your colour out, y'all may end up with green pilus! But don't worry; it tin can be fixed!
What's the Budget?
Depending on your hair-washing habits, you may accept to re-tone anywhere from 2–8 weeks in. Make sure you don't wash your hair directly after toning because the color will start to slip out.
The less frequently y'all wash, the longer your color will stay in. Not to mention, you really shouldn't be washing your hair every day . . . information technology strips out your natural oils and dries out your hair. Which is really not the best thing to do when you've but been bleaching and toning!
Keep Workout!
Whatsoever time you mess with bleach or ammonia, it's a great idea to show your hair some love too. Utilize a leave-in conditioner, or apply a hair mask every and then often! There are some really not bad ones that are so elementary to make and oft use ingredients you probably have in your kitchen.
I of my favorites is to heat upward extra virgin olive oil until it's warm to the bear upon. Sitting over the tub, lean over so your head is kind of between your knees, and your pilus is flipped upside down. Massage the warm oil into your scalp to moisturize your pilus and activate your pilus follicles. This is supposed to help your pilus grow likewise! Leave the oil in for as long as you're comfortable, simply at to the lowest degree 30 minutes, before washing out with a sulfate-free shampoo.
Coconut oil is some other neat tool to employ when moisturizing hair. Don't hesitate to look upwards unlike pilus "recipes" to keep your mane soft and potent!

I had my hair colored platinum a day ago with a new girl. She bleached it and added pink highlights. While she was doing the highlights she said she would put a toner on. When she was done my hair on the sides were very nighttime (pixie cut). The top is a lite purple. It looks really awful!!!! How can I get the toner out?? Thank you!!

I bleached my daughter's dark blonde hair with Schwarzkopf BlondMe and then dyed with a mix of Igora Royal Rose and Pearlescence Coral well-nigh 2 months ago. It has faded a lot and she now wants to go with more of a calorie-free golden blonde. She has regrowth equally well. Would an ammonia-based toner work ?
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on June 03, 2020:
T18 isn't going to work, information technology merely works on super light hair. If information technology were me, I'd go over the roots with a lite brown dye. I'd employ just at the roots, because if you have information technology too far down your strands, information technology risks bleeding onto the parts y'all've just bleached!
K Harris on June 01, 2020:
Hi at that place,
I attempted to give myself calm balayage during quarantine and I recollect something went sort of wrong with the toning stage. I used a bleach powder with a 30 developer, painted the strands I wanted lighter, let it set up for a little while, and when I took it out, the strands were lite yellow which is what I was expecting (I started as an ashy light chocolate-brown, and my hair lifts very quickly). However, when I toned, I used a the Wella T27 toner with ten developer, put information technology all over my caput, and may have waited a bit too long (somewhere around 45 mins). Instead of toning but the lightened strands and achieving a biscuit blonde with brown roots, the bottoms of my hair are fine and are blonde, but the top is orange-y and yellow and I don't know how to fix it. I tried royal shampoo but it'southward all the same yellow/orangish (almost looks more like strawberry blonde). It's not horrible, simply it's not what I wanted. Should I tone once more with a different toner (possibly something more ashy like T18) and use xx developer or ten developer? Or should I go over elevation of my roots with a light brown hair dye and merely dye roots? I'chiliad not sure what move to brand here. Any communication would be helpful!!
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on May 10, 2020:
I've never used the Schwarzkopf brand before so I'g not very familiar with it, but if you accept yellowish tones in it it seems that Schwarzkopf Ice Toner may be what you're looking for. That should tone y'all to a light white/silver! I'grand assuming you lot're going for platinum blonde, that seems to exist the most similar to Wella T18 which is what I employ to go to platinum. Good luck!
Mia on May 08, 2020:
I bleached my hair with Schwarzkopf Blond me and 20 volume water, but I was afraid of breaking my hair then I´ve removed the bleach after 20 minutes. Some parts are quite orange now. After that, I mixed a 9.1 with 7 volume developer and I left it, on wet hair, around x minutes. I done it with majestic shampoo and I performed a keratin treatment after. I don´t hate it merely all the same is in some parts kinda yellow. And then my question is, can I bleach information technology over again on the roots, and what produuct of Schwarkopf blond me do you reccomend me to tone information technology. I'm from spain this is a brand I tin can become here that is why I am asking. Thanks very much.
Alex Rose (writer) from Virginia on May 05, 2020:
I would recommend giving information technology a few days to a week - don't shampoo in that time! Only employ conditioner or hair oils to hydrate your pilus. Shampooing will just strip the moisture back out. Luckily you probably aren't seeing that many people right now so it's the best time to but accept intendance of your pilus.
Usually this is the process I'll exercise - I lighten it upwards enough, go out information technology yellow for a week, then do the toner. Just brand sure you keep workout, and endeavour non to shampoo so frequently. Since I've gotten my hair to white, I merely shampoo it once a week. Use a dry shampoo if you demand! Good luck!

I remember you lot would have to bleach your hair kickoff, which should be quick and easy since your hair is already blonde. I'd use Ion Bright White Creme Lightener and Salon Care 10 Volume Creme Programmer. Since yous've never washed your hair before, you should enlist someone to help you get fifty-fifty coverage with the bleach!
Once you've gotten it to the lightness you want, rinse out. Could be anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes. Then utilise Wella T18 toner with 10 or twenty volume developer!
Chantal on April 29, 2020:
Hi, I am naturally blonde and take never dyed my pilus. My hair is a natural blonde color with golden undertones. I would love to go more of a argent blonde with absurd undertones. Do you accept any tips as to which products I tin can use to reach this? Thank y'all in advance!
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on April 27, 2020:
Hullo! So information technology'southward pretty difficult to go from brownish to silver, simply your friend is right, he probably volition accept to bleach twice. I ordinarily become my supplies from Sally Beauty, which is closed correct now, but you tin can order from their stores online with no big shipping delays.
Unfortunately drug stores and superstores similar WalMart don't usually have the correct supplies for bleaching or toning, but they have plenty of dye.
If you lot can society online from Emerge's, I'd recommend getting Wella T18 toner and Salon Care twenty volume creme developer. These products will tone his hair to a more than neutral colour, only they will ONLY work if all of his hair is low-cal yellow. If you're still seeing some dark yellow and orangish tones in information technology, he needs to bleach once more before using toner.
If y'all're searching for some other sort of bleach to apply, I recommend Ion Bright White Creme Lightener, which you can too use with the 20 volume developer. All of these products can be constitute on Sally Beauty'south website! Sorry I can't recommend something in-shop, it may be better to order online right now anyways!
Lisa on April 25, 2020:
How-do-you-do, your manufactures are great and full of easy to understand info. My son decided he wants to dye his pilus grayness/silver. He ordered a bleach kit, and dye, merely he has dark brown pilus so he was told by a friend he would need to bleach it twice and then he did it concluding dark and was planning on doing it again today but information technology'due south definitely yellow and needs toner. Could y'all recommend a toner/hair colour kit that we could detect at a grocery store, cvs, target or a Walmart that would be an option to employ as toner since the beauty stores are airtight?
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on April 23, 2020:
It's ideal to have platinum blonde pilus before using a blueish dye. Toner'southward not going to assist you unless your hair is light enough in the start place. The unfortunate truth about blue is that blue + blonde (basically xanthous tones) = green. Information technology'southward always going to fade green unless your hair is platinum, white, or silver underneath. My process is to bleach to super low-cal yellow, tone with Wella T18 to accept basically white-platinum pilus, and then apply blue dye. If you lot don't desire to bleach it platinum, the only solution I can see hither is to only wash your hair in one case a week, and apply dye about once a week or two to keep it from fading.
Every bit for roots, when I'm using blue I always bleach my roots subsequently about 4-6 weeks, and apply color directly after. I practice recommend Arctic Fox dejection considering they don't accept whatever harsh chemicals in them and are very vibrant. If you lot're not bleaching your roots, you can simply use AF dye correct onto them, leave it in for a couple hours, and rinse out in the shower!
Megan on April 22, 2020:
I desire to add bluish to my hair, but I hate when it fades to a light-green-ish tone, how can I avert this? Should I use a toner between bleaching and dying it blue? I currently dye over my darker blonde pilus with a Wella 8N without bleaching it in order to slightly lighten information technology. I'm going to bleach the underneath layer of my pilus with a xx developer in order to get a more than vibrant colour, but I'thousand not going to go super blonde. Should I utilise a toner to help prevent the blue from fading to green? Is there a better blue make I should use later the bleach? Also, when touching upwardly the blue color later, do you have tips for what I should be doing with my roots? Thank you!!
Alex Rose (writer) from Virginia on April 22, 2020:
Purple shampoo doesn't do a whole lot unless you lot leave it in for a long fourth dimension, I'd say it's probably meliorate for you to tone your hair again. If you're able to make an appointment, I'd become with that - just if you're stuck doing information technology at home, you should easily be able to tone!
If your highlights are super low-cal, similar yellowy, I'd use Wella T18. I'one thousand thinking since your hair is brown, yours may be more of a golden color, in which case I'd recommend Wella T35. You'd mix a xx book programmer with this and and then apply information technology to the lightened sections. Look up "Wella Toner Nautical chart" on google images and yous'll find a graphic that will help show you what the different toners do!
Sandra Grooms on April 17, 2020:
My hair is dark accept I had highlights done about 4 months agone and the are turning brassy, I've used purple shampoo and it hasn't done anything. Can I tone my hair to lighten them back up or should I accept them redone??
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on Apr xv, 2020:
If y'all want highlights to exist touched up, the merely way you'll exist able to do it is with bleach! Dye is adding color on tiptop, while bleach is pulling pigment out and making it lighter. A toner is something you would use on hair that has already been lightened.
Bleach is a lot to learn and there are lots of mistakes that you can make - it may be best to simply expect until salons open support, unless you are 100% assail doing information technology at dwelling! I do accept some manufactures on how to use bleach - you should be able to pick up bleach highlight kits from a drug store. They include a cap that yous accept to pull little bits of pilus through.
Patricia Lingard on April 15, 2020:

@jane Toshack - Yes exactly what she said. You should catch a color wheel if you are doing your own hair. Its a must. I got mine for a few dollars at the fine art store near me. Everyone's hair is different, depending on what toner you lot use you lot may end up toning only the yellow and not the orange! If you lot get for something with a blue-violet base it should encompass both areas. If you lot're assail not bleaching, that'southward what I would await for. Just go along in mind, y'all may not be able to reach ash from orangish without another bleaching. Wella has a toner that works on "aureate" hair, T35. You could besides try using an ash blonde box dye. Some other option for the oranges would be to selection up a bluish toning shampoo, that will gradually reduce the orange tones should they non come up out otherwise. There are pretty good reviews for Joico's Color Balance Blue Shampoo!

I just had highlights done. When stylist took foils out and done my hair, she put something on my hair...information technology smelled strong (like dye). I asked what information technology was and she said toner. I never had toner smell like this. I call up information technology was hair dye for a fault. She said MG7 on roots and MG 6 on ends or something like that to her asst. My hair looks like it has zero highlights after having foils/bleach put on information technology for xx mins. Stylist said it volition fade. It looks like I never had my pilus colored. Any thoughts on if this was actually toner or not?

I just bought a biscuit blonde instead of ash blonde. I also bought a toner from Schwarzkopf. I would love to have the purple color with the girl with her face covered. Do I have to put majestic conditioner in the toner to go this color or if you please, tell me the steps you accept taken to achieve this color. I too bought from amazon a color merely fabricated in the Great britain and information technology is like this purple simply has more color every bit it is a PEARL color. So I thought I would blond my pilus showtime to get ready for the PEARL color. I want to become this right and would love to hear how to practise the calorie-free blonde to majestic as in the motion picture higher up. I am ready to go buy a hair stripper if needed and I found some expensive regal shampoo and I really would love to accomplish this color. Aid ME Delight? THANKS A MILLION...Brigitte

Hey so my hair turned COMPLETELY yellow. We are talking pee yellow here. I was dark blond and used the l'oreal Perfect blonde creme that lifts your hair up to half dozen tones. I bleached it once and it turned Actually yellow, and and so i realised it hadnt been sitting long enough. And so a few hours later i did it again and permit information technology sit the remanining fourth dimension. It turned it lighter and a slighter bit less yellow. I was wondering what I should do? I'yard starting in school in 6 days and i'd like it to be pretty there (when my hair has calmed downwards the programme is to colour it pastel pinkish, can i do that on slighty yellowish hair? or?)
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on Baronial 02, 2017:
The dye toner won't brand your hair lighter, merely take out the brassiness. I believe when I did a dye toner I left it in for about 20 minutes. Information technology was still a darkish blonde, the merely way to get any lift would exist to use a product with bleach or ammonia.
maidenblush on July 31, 2017:
Hi, I was wondering how often can yous tone the pilus using majestic hair dye + conditioner? I recently bleached my level one/ii hair twice till it got to a orangish brassy colour. And then I dyed information technology in a blonde shade and got like an ashy blonde colour, but even so had the brassiness so I made myself a diy purple toner and left it for only 5mins. Should I leave the purple dye in longer the next time to achieve a lighter hair colour? Or should I re-dye information technology over with a blonde shade?
Your reply would be greatly appreciated! xx

Thank yous for your great article! Very informative! Question for you- I have tried a couple unlike Color Charm toner shades after doing at home frosting (both lighter and darker blond highlights). Here'due south my problem- I'm a natural redhead that's now mostly chocolate-brown red with a bit of gray, now that I'g in my 40'south. And then, obviously for me, lots and lots of brassiness whenever I try to frost/highlight. Would you still recommend this toner for someone like me? I'm a bit stumped whenever I use information technology, as to whether I should leave it on for shorter or longer than recommended time.

Then I had highlights simply done past a professional and I have dark brown pilus. A friend who claimed she was a colorist offered to tone the brassy highlights a bit - using wella t18 with 20 developer and it turned my ENTIRE head orange. Question - is this permanent? will it fade? If I become it color corrected professionally with another toner what will happen when it starts to launder out- will I go orange over again?

I don't know if information technology would physically hurt or non, seems like you lot have a sensitive scalp. It would definitely help with the colour though.
Libby Stephens on July 07, 2017:
Hey, my neice bleached my roots 4th of July. Which came out yellow blonde. And then put toner t18 on it. I had it on for 8 minutes and started burning. So, i washed information technology out. My hair in front is silver and my part and back and sides are still xanthous. Would it hurt to go dorsum with the toner once more, or should i wait.?
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on July 01, 2017:
Yous will have to either bleach the ends again or use a color stripper! I would nearly rather go with bleach to exist certain information technology works. It's e'er going to work better on virgin pilus that is at your roots, the heat from your scalp makes it develop quicker. So I would say try out another bleach and come across if it's light plenty to tone platinum!
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on July 01, 2017:
I would just endeavour to tone once again if it is only lite yellow streaks! I accept not used t14 earlier just if it has proficient reviews, may exist worth a try!

Should I utilize a dissimilar wella toner, heard t14 is good. My hair is holding upwards quite well. Thank you.

I just got my hair dyed yesterday and went from dark blonde to light blonde, but unfortunately the colour turned out too yellow-ish and makes me looked washed out because my skin is really off-white. If you toned, nothing major would happen to your brown hair. If anything it would only be toned a little cooler too, but information technology won't lighten upwardly or anything.

Hi, pitiful if you've already answered this question but I accept brown hair with blonde highlights and lowlights. The highlighted pieces are starting to plow a piddling yellow and orange. I already apply imperial shampoo simply it doesn't seem to make much of a departure. If I were to tone my pilus would anything happen to the hair that is brown?

I would get out the pink alone and tone! You might even consider using a light pink from Manic Panic - that won't have whatever harsh chemicals in it similar a toner would. They take Cotton wool Candy Pink if you'd like to check it out!

Hey, loved your article. My hair has been through a lot recently; I made the mistake of listening to Sally's employees...So long story brusque, I dyed my pilus a dark blood-red, and eventually decided that I didn't like the color. I wanted to go to a light brown, that fades into kind of a rose pink. I waited a few days, and was told to go alee and bleach information technology as stake as I can become it. My biggest mistake was non using a dye-remover to accept out the carmine dye. I've got some orange, yellow, and really stake pinkish streaks going on. I've done several bleach baths; that'due south the maximum damage that my hair tin take at this point.
What would you propose that I do from here? Should I leave the pink streaks alone since that I'll have the roses pink in my hair somewhen anyhow? And just tone the remainder?
Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on April nineteen, 2017:
T14 should work well on the darker parts of the highlights! If the rest of your hair is super dark, I would just put it on the lightened parts. Won't make much of a divergence on your nighttime hair.
Nina on April 18, 2017:

can I use T14 Toner? and should I apply toner for all my hair or Only the highlighted parts?

waveybadrian, are you bleaching or dying your pilus? Toner is meant to exist used after bleach, on a make clean slate. I'm honestly not sure how information technology volition work on pilus that already has a production on it. It may be fine! But you can probably find a toner that would work in place of a dye, so you lot don't accept to use double the chemicals on your hair. Wella 9a/940 or Wella 8a/740 one/two may exist some toners to consider!
